His name is Guts, the Black Swordsman, a feared warrior spoken of only in whispers. Bearer of a gigantic sword, an iron hand, and the scars of countless battles and tortures, his flesh is also indelibly marked with The Brand, an unholy symbol that draws the forces of darkness to him and dooms him as their sacrifice. But Guts won't take his fate lying down; he'll cut a crimson swath of carnage through the ranks of the damned -- and anyone else foolish enough to oppose him! Accompanied by Puck the Elf, more an annoyance than a companion, Guts relentlessly follows a dark, bloodstained path that leads only to death...or vengeance. Created by Kenturo Miura, Berserk is manga mayhem to the extreme -- violent, horrifying, and mercilessly funny -- and the wellspring for the internationally popular anime series. Not for the squeamish or the easily offended, Berserk asks for no quarter -- and offers none!

Kentaro Miura's artwork is excellent! I'm not much a horror fan, but Berserk makes other violent manga like kiddie books. I like Puck, he's a nice companion to Guts

Much as some anime watchers don't realize, Kentaro Miura's 'Berserk' predates the anime version by several years, and continues to be one of the most visceral and fascinating manga epics. Don't expect to finish this series anytime soon though, it spans over 25 volumes currently, and Miura continues to write even now. Not for the young or faint of heart.

Sometimes you see a title for something and it catches in your mind. That happened for me with Berserk. I soon saw the Anime(well most of it) and was quite impressed. Then I read the manga was coming out, and then picked it up. My god, I was blown away, screw the anime, the manga rules all. The anime left sooo much out of the FIRST EPISODE, that it is ridiculous. One plus about the manga, no Puck.... I dislike that stupid fairy.

Finally, Berserk makes it into manga form for the rest of us. First of all, if you are a fan of the incredible anime series, you should pick up this book as soon as possible--this series will basically pick up where the anime left off, as well as give some more background and in-depth detail (afterall, it was on this material that the anime series was based on). As for the book itself, it is wonderful. It begins with Guts coming to destroy the Snake Baron, and continues onward to material not covered in the anime series. The artwork is flawless, and the majority of the dialogue is great as well. Also, Puck the elf, a character omitted from the anime series, joins Guts on his journey and provides some decent comic relief. Still, don't let that discourage any of the action-oriented fans: There is plenty of hacking, slashing, and shooting for all Berserk fans to enjoy (as well as some wonderful new creatures for Guts to deal with). This is a great start to an exceptional series, and I urge all fans of the anime series to purchase this book. Also, for newcomers to the world of Berserk, this is a great saga for anyone who enjoys intelligent and violent stories. Not for the young or people who find violence distasteful, but for everyone else, don't give this book a second look. You won't be disappointed, especially once the rest of the series is released.
